HERODS OPINION OF JESUS
The Death of John the Baptist
MK 6:14 (MT 14:1, LK 9:7)
14 King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’* name had become known.
Some were* saying, ‘John the baptizer has been raised from
the dead; and for this reason these powers are at work in him.’
15But others said, ‘It is Elijah.’ And others said,
‘It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.’
16But when Herod heard of it, he said, ‘John, whom I beheaded,
has been raised.’
Jesus before Pilate
28 Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters.*
It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters,*
so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover.
29So Pilate went out to them and said, ‘What accusation do
you bring against this man?’ 30They answered, ‘If this
man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.’
31Pilate said to them, ‘Take him yourselves and judge him
according to your law.’ The Jews replied, ‘We are not
permitted to put anyone to death.’ 32(This was to fulfil what
Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.)
33 Then Pilate entered the headquarters* again, summoned Jesus,
and asked him, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ 34Jesus
answered, ‘Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell
you about me?’ 35Pilate replied, ‘I am not a Jew, am
I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to
me. What have you done?’ 36Jesus answered, ‘My kingdom
is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers
would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews.
But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.’ 37Pilate asked
him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You
say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into
the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the
truth listens to my voice.’ 38Pilate asked him, ‘What
is truth?’
Jesus Sentenced to Death
JN 18:29 (MT 27:11, MK 15:1, LK 23:1)
After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them,
‘I find no case against him. 39But you have a custom that
I release someone for you at the Passover. Do you want me to release
for you the King of the Jews?’ 40They shouted in reply, ‘Not
this man, but Barabbas!’ Now Barabbas was a bandit.
. 19While he was sitting on the judgement seat, his wife sent word
to him, ‘Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for today
I have suffered a great deal because of a dream about him.’
19Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2And the soldiers
wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they dressed
him in a purple robe. 3They kept coming up to him, saying, ‘Hail,
King of the Jews!’ and striking him on the face. 4Pilate went
out again and said to them, ‘Look, I am bringing him out to
you to let you know that I find no case against him.’ 5So
Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.
Pilate said to them, ‘Here is the man!’ 6When the chief
priests and the police saw him, they shouted, ‘Crucify him!
Crucify him!’ Pilate said to them, ‘Take him yourselves
and crucify him; I find no case against him.’ 7The Jews answered
him, ‘We have a law, and according to that law he ought to
die because he has claimed to be the Son of God.’
8 Now when Pilate heard this, he was more afraid than ever. 9He
entered his headquarters* again and asked Jesus, ‘Where are
you from?’ But Jesus gave him no answer. 10Pilate therefore
said to him, ‘Do you refuse to speak to me? Do you not know
that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?’
11Jesus answered him, ‘You would have no power over me unless
it had been given you from above; therefore the one who handed me
over to you is guilty of a greater sin.’ 12From then on Pilate
tried to release him, but the Jews cried out, ‘If you release
this man, you are no friend of the emperor. Everyone who claims
to be a king sets himself against the emperor.’
13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat*
on the judge’s bench at a place called The Stone Pavement,
or in Hebrew* Gabbatha. 14Now it was the day of Preparation for
the Passover; and it was about noon.
JN 19:14
He said to the Jews, ‘Here is your King!’ 15They cried
out, ‘Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!’ Pilate
asked them, ‘Shall I crucify your King?’ The chief priests
answered, ‘We have no king but the emperor.’ 16Then
he handed him over to them to be crucified.
Pilate Hands Jesus over to Be Crucified
MT 27:24
24 So when Pilate saw that he could do nothing, but rather that
a riot was beginning, he took some water and washed his hands before
the crowd, saying, ‘I am innocent of this man’s blood;*
see to it yourselves.’ 25Then the people as a whole answered,
‘His blood be on us and on our children!’ 26So he released
Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over
to be crucified.
XIX. Death of Judas
The Suicide of Judas
3 When Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus* was condemned, he repented
and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and
the elders. 4He said, ‘I have sinned by betraying innocent* blood.’
But they said, ‘What is that to us? See to it yourself.’ 5Throwing
down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed; and he went and
hanged himself. 6But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said,
‘It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since they are
blood money.’ 7After conferring together, they used them to buy
the potter’s field as a place to bury foreigners. 8For this reason
that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then was fulfilled
what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah,* ‘And they took*
the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one on whom a price had
been set,* on whom some of the people of Israel had set a price, 10and
they gave* them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.’
XX. Crucifixion to Empty Tomb
The Crucifixion of Jesus
LK 23:26 (MT 27:32, MK 27:32)
26 As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who
was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and
made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A great number of the people followed
him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and
wailing for him. 28But Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters
of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for
your children. 29For the days are surely coming when they will say,
“Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and
the breasts that never nursed.” 30Then they will begin to
say to the mountains, “Fall on us”; and to the hills,
“Cover us.” 31For if they do this when the wood is green,
what will happen when it is dry?’
32 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put
to death with him.
JN 19:19
19Pilate also had an inscription written
and put on the cross. It read, ‘Jesus of Nazareth,* the King
of the Jews.’ 20Many of the Jews read this inscription, because
the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was
written in Hebrew,* in Latin, and in Greek. 21Then the chief priests
of the Jews said to Pilate, ‘Do not write, “The King
of the Jews”, but, “This man said, I am King of the
Jews.” ’ 22Pilate answered, ‘What I have written
I have written.’
MK 15:22 (MT 27:33)
33When they came to the place that is called
The Skull,
LK 23:33
they crucified Jesus* there with the criminals,
one on his right and one on his left. [[ 34Then Jesus said, ‘Father,
forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing
JN 19:23 (MT 27:35, LK 23:34, MK 15:24)
. 23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus,
they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for
each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless,
woven in one piece from the top. 24So they said to one another,
‘Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see who will
get it.’ This was to fulfil what the scripture says,
‘They divided my clothes among themselves,
and for my clothing they cast lots.’
25And that is what the soldiers did.
Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and
his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing
beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’
27Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’
And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
LK 23:35
35And the people stood by, watching; but
the leaders scoffed at him, saying, ‘He saved others; let
him save himself if he is the Messiah* of God, his chosen one!’
36The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour
wine, 37and saying, ‘If you are the King of the Jews, save
yourself!’ 38There was also an inscription over him,* ‘This
is the King of the Jews.’
39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding* him
and saying, ‘Are you not the Messiah?* Save yourself and us!’
40But the other rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not fear God,
since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41And we
indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve
for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.’ 42Then
he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into* your kingdom.’
43He replied, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me
in Paradise.’
The Death of Jesus
MT 27:45 (LK 23:44, MK 15:33)
45 From noon on, darkness came over the whole land* until three
in the afternoon. 46And about three o’clock Jesus cried with
a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ that is,
‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ 47When some
of the bystanders heard it, they said, ‘This man is calling
for Elijah.’ 48At once one of them ran and got a sponge, filled
it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink.
49But the others said, ‘Wait, let us see whether Elijah will
come to save him.’* 50Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice
and breathed his last.* 51At that moment the curtain of the temple
was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks
were split. 52The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the
saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53After his resurrection
they came out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared
to many. 54Now when the centurion and those with him, who were keeping
watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were
terrified and said, ‘Truly this man was God’s Son!’*
MK 15:40 (LK 8:2)
40 There were also women looking on from
a distance; among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother
of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41These used to follow
him and provided for him when he was in Galilee; and there were
many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
Jesus’ Side Is Pierced
JN 19:31
31 Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the
bodies left on the cross during the sabbath, especially because
that sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate
to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed.
32Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of
the other who had been crucified with him. 33But when they came
to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his
legs. 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear,
and at once blood and water came out. 35(He who saw this has testified
so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows*
that he tells the truth.) 36These things occurred so that the scripture
might be fulfilled, ‘None of his bones shall be broken.’
37And again another passage of scripture says, ‘They will
look on the one whom they have pierced.’
The Burial of Jesus
MK 15:42 (MT 27:57, LK 23:50. JN 19:38)
42 When evening had come, and since it was the day of Preparation,
that is, the day before the sabbath, 43Joseph of Arimathea, a respected
member of the council, who was also himself waiting expectantly
for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the
body of Jesus. 44Then Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and
summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead for
some time. 45When he learned from the centurion that he was dead,
he granted the body to Joseph;
JN 19:38
so he came and removed his body. 39Nicodemus,
who had at first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture
of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds. 40They took
the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths,
according to the burial custom of the Jews. 41Now there was a garden
in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden there was
a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. 42And so, because
it was the Jewish day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they
laid Jesus there.
LK 23:55
.* 55The women who had come with him from
Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how his body was laid.
56Then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments.
On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
MK 15:47
He then rolled a stone against the door of
the tomb. 47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where
the body* was laid.
The Guard at the Tomb
MT 27:62
62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief
priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63and said, ‘Sir,
we remember what that impostor said while he was still alive, “After
three days I will rise again.” 64Therefore command that the
tomb be made secure until the third day; otherwise his disciples
may go and steal him away, and tell the people, “He has been
raised from the dead”, and the last deception would be worse
than the first.’ 65Pilate said to them, ‘You have a
guard* of soldiers; go, make it as secure as you can.’* 66So
they went with the guard and made the tomb secure by sealing the
stone.
XXI. Resurrection
The Resurrection of Jesus
JN 20:1 (LK 24:1, MK 16:1, MT 28:1)
20Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary
Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed
from the tomb. 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other
disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They
have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they
have laid him.’ 3Then Peter and the other disciple set out
and went towards the tomb. 4The two were running together, but the
other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent
down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he
did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into
the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7and the cloth
that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings
but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Then the other disciple, who
reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9for
as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise
from the dead. 10Then the disciples returned to their homes.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
JN 20:11 (MK 16:9)
11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent
over to look* into the tomb; 12and she saw two angels in white,
sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head
and the other at the feet. 13They said to her, ‘Woman, why
are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken
away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’
14When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing
there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her,
‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’
Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if
you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and
I will take him away.’ 16Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’
She turned and said to him in Hebrew,* ‘Rabbouni!’ (which
means Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me,
because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers
and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father,
to my God and your God.” ’ 18Mary Magdalene went and
announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’;
and she told them that he had said these things to her.
The Report of the Guard
MT 28:11
11 While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and
told the chief priests everything that had happened. 12After the
priests* had assembled with the elders, they devised a plan to give
a large sum of money to the soldiers, 13telling them, ‘You
must say, “His disciples came by night and stole him away
while we were asleep.” 14If this comes to the governor’s
ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.’ 15So
they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story
is still told among the Jews to this day.
The Walk to Emmaus
LK 24:13 (MK 16:12)
13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called
Emmaus, about seven miles* from Jerusalem, 14and talking with each
other about all these things that had happened. 15While they were
talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them,
16but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to
them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk
along?’ They stood still, looking sad.* 18Then one of them,
whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger
in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place
there in these days?’ 19He asked them, ‘What things?’
They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth,* who was
a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
20and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned
to death and crucified him. 21But we had hoped that he was the one
to redeem Israel.* Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third
day since these things took place. 22Moreover, some women of our
group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23and
when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us
that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was
alive. 24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found
it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.’
25Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how
slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26Was
it not necessary that the Messiah* should suffer these things and
then enter into his glory?’ 27Then beginning with Moses and
all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself
in all the scriptures.
28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked
ahead as if he were going on. 29But they urged him strongly, saying,
‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is
now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. 30When
he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke
it, and gave it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened, and they
recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32They said to
each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us* while
he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures
to us?’ 33That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem;
and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together.
34They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has
appeared to Simon!’ 35Then they told what had happened on
the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking
of the bread.
Jesus Appears to His Disciples
LK 24:36 (JN 20:19)
36 While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among
them and said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’* 37They
were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a
ghost. 38He said to them, ‘Why are you frightened, and why
do doubts arise in your hearts? 39Look at my hands and my feet;
see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not
have flesh and bones as you see that I have.’ 40And when he
had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.* 41While in
their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to
them, ‘Have you anything here to eat?’ 42They gave him
a piece of broiled fish, 43and he took it and ate in their presence.
44 Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke
to you while I was still with you—that everything written
about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must
be fulfilled.’ 45Then he opened their minds to understand
the scriptures, 46and he said to them, ‘Thus it is written,
that the Messiah* is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the
third day, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be
proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
48You are witnesses* of these things. 49And see, I am sending upon
you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you
have been clothed with power from on high.’
Jesus and Thomas
JN 20:24
24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin*), one of the twelve, was
not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him,
‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless
I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the
mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’
26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas
was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood
among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 27Then he
said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach
out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’
28Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ 29Jesus
said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’
Jesus Commissions the Disciples
MK 16:14 (MT 28:16)
14 Later he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were sitting
at the table; and he upbraided them for their lack of faith and
stubbornness, because they had not believed those who saw him after
he had risen.* 15And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world
and proclaim the good news* to the whole creation. 16The one who
believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not
believe will be condemned. 17And these signs will accompany those
who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will
speak in new tongues; 18they will pick up snakes in their hands,*
and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they
will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.’
Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples
JN 21:1
21After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples
by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. 2Gathered
there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin,* Nathanael
of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.
3Simon Peter said to them, ‘I am going fishing.’ They
said to him, ‘We will go with you.’ They went out and
got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
4 Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples
did not know that it was Jesus. 5Jesus said to them, ‘Children,
you have no fish, have you?’ They answered him, ‘No.’
6He said to them, ‘Cast the net to the right side of the boat,
and you will find some.’ So they cast it, and now they were
not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. 7That disciple
whom Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’ When
Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes,
for he was naked, and jumped into the lake. 8But the other disciples
came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not
far from the land, only about a hundred yards* off.
9 When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with
fish on it, and bread. 10Jesus said to them, ‘Bring some of
the fish that you have just caught.’ 11So Simon Peter went
aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred
and fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net
was not torn. 12Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’
Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, ‘Who are you?’
because they knew it was the Lord. 13Jesus came and took the bread
and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14This was
now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he
was raised from the dead.
Jesus and Peter
JN 21:15
15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,
‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’
He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’
Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my lambs.’ 16A second time
he said to him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’
He said to him, ‘Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.’
Jesus said to him, ‘Tend my sheep.’ 17He said to him
the third time, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’
Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ‘Do
you love me?’ And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know everything;
you know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed
my sheep. 18Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used
to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when
you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else
will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish
to go.’ 19(He said this to indicate the kind of death by which
he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, ‘Follow
me.’
Jesus and the Beloved Disciple
JN 21:20
20 Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following
them; he was the one who had reclined next to Jesus at the supper
and had said, ‘Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?’
21When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, ‘Lord, what about
him?’ 22Jesus said to him, ‘If it is my will that he
remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!’ 23So
the rumour spread in the community* that this disciple would not
die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, ‘If
it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?’*
Acts 1 6 INSERT HERE
The Ascension of Jesus
MK 16:19
19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken
up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20And they
went out and proclaimed the good news everywhere, while the Lord
worked with them and confirmed the message by the signs that accompanied
it.*
