The Parable of the Lost Sheep
LK 15:1
15Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen
to him. 2And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying,
‘This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.’
3 So he told them this parable: 4‘Which one of you, having
a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine
in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds
it? 5When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices.
6And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbours,
saying to them, “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep
that was lost.” 7Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy
in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous
people who need no repentance.
Forgiveness
MT 18:21 (LK 17:4)
21 Then Peter came and said to him, ‘Lord, if another member
of the church* sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many
as seven times?’ 22Jesus said to him, ‘Not seven times,
but, I tell you, seventy-seven* times.
The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant
23 ‘For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared
to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24When
he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents* was
brought to him; 25and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him
to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions,
and payment to be made. 26So the slave fell on his knees before
him, saying, “Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.”
27And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and
forgave him the debt. 28But that same slave, as he went out, came
upon one of his fellow-slaves who owed him a hundred denarii;* and
seizing him by the throat, he said, “Pay what you owe.”
29Then his fellow-slave fell down and pleaded with him, “Have
patience with me, and I will pay you.” 30But he refused; then
he went and threw him into prison until he should pay the debt.
31When his fellow-slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly
distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had
taken place. 32Then his lord summoned him and said to him, “You
wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with
me. 33Should you not have had mercy on your fellow-slave, as I had
mercy on you?” 34And in anger his lord handed him over to
be tortured until he should pay his entire debt. 35So my heavenly
Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your
brother or sister* from your heart.’
The Parable of the Two Sons
MT 21:28
28 ‘What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the
first and said, “Son, go and work in the vineyard today.”
29He answered, “I will not”; but later he changed his
mind and went. 30The father* went to the second and said the same;
and he answered, “I go, sir”; but he did not go. 31Which
of the two did the will of his father?’ They said, ‘The
first.’
MT 21:31 (LK 7:29)
Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell
you, the tax-collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom
of God ahead of you. 32For John came to you in the way of righteousness
and you did not believe him, but the tax-collectors and the prostitutes
believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your
minds and believe him.
The Parable of the Wicked Tenants
MT 21:33 (MK 12:1, LK 20:9)
33 ‘Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted
a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built
a watch-tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another
country. 34When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to
the tenants to collect his produce. 35But the tenants seized his
slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. 36Again
he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them
in the same way. 37Finally he sent his son to them, saying, “They
will respect my son.” 38But when the tenants saw the son,
they said to themselves, “This is the heir; come, let us kill
him and get his inheritance.” 39So they seized him, threw
him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40Now when the owner of
the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?’ 41They
said to him, ‘He will put those wretches to a miserable death,
and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce
at the harvest time.’
42 Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the scriptures:
“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;*
this was the Lord’s doing,
and it is amazing in our eyes”?
43Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from
you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom.*
44The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and
it will crush anyone on whom it falls.’*
45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables,
they realized that he was speaking about them. 46They wanted to
arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they regarded him
as a prophet.
The Parable of the Wedding Banquet
MT 22:1 (LK 14:15)
22Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: 2‘The
kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet
for his son. 3He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited
to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. 4Again he sent
other slaves, saying, “Tell those who have been invited: Look,
I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered,
and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.” 5But
they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to
his business, 6while the rest seized his slaves, maltreated them,
and killed them. 7The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed
those murderers, and burned their city. 8Then he said to his slaves,
“The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy.
9Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find
to the wedding banquet.” 10Those slaves went out into the
streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so
the wedding hall was filled with guests.
11 ‘But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed
a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, 12and he said to
him, “Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?”
And he was speechless. 13Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind
him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 14For many are
called, but few are chosen.’
The Parable of the Talents
MT 25:14 (LK 19:11)
14 ‘For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his
slaves and entrusted his property to them; 15to one he gave five
talents,* to another two, to another one, to each according to his
ability. Then he went away. 16The one who had received the five
talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more
talents. 17In the same way, the one who had the two talents made
two more talents. 18But the one who had received the one talent
went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s
money. 19After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled
accounts with them. 20Then the one who had received the five talents
came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, “Master,
you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.”
21His master said to him, “Well done, good and trustworthy
slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you
in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.”
22And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, “Master,
you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.”
23His master said to him, “Well done, good and trustworthy
slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you
in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.”
24Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward,
saying, “Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping
where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed;
25so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground.
Here you have what is yours.” 26But his master replied, “You
wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did
not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? 27Then you ought to
have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would
have received what was my own with interest. 28So take the talent
from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. 29For to
all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance;
but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken
away. 30As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness,
where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
LK 12:16
16Then he told them a parable: ‘The
land of a rich man produced abundantly. 17And he thought to himself,
“What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?”
18Then he said, “I will do this: I will pull down my barns
and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my
goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid
up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” 20But God
said to him, “You fool! This very night your life is being
demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they
be?” 21So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves
but are not rich towards God.’
The Parable of the Lost Coin
LK 15:8
8 ‘Or what woman having ten silver coins,* if she loses one
of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully
until she finds it? 9When she has found it, she calls together her
friends and neighbours, saying, “Rejoice with me, for I have
found the coin that I had lost.” 10Just so, I tell you, there
is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who
repents.’
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax-Collector
LK 18:9
9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that
they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: 10‘Two
men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other
a tax-collector. 11The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying
thus, “God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves,
rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax-collector. 12I fast twice
a week; I give a tenth of all my income.” 13But the tax-collector,
standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating
his breast and saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!”
14I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than
the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all
who humble themselves will be exalted.’
The Parable of the Widow and the Unjust Judge
LK 18:1
18Then Jesus* told them a parable about their need to pray always
and not to lose heart. 2He said, ‘In a certain city there
was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people. 3In
that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, “Grant
me justice against my opponent.” 4For a while he refused;
but later he said to himself, “Though I have no fear of God
and no respect for anyone, 5yet because this widow keeps bothering
me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by
continually coming.” ’* 6And the Lord said, ‘Listen
to what the unjust judge says. 7And will not God grant justice to
his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long
in helping them? 8I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them.
And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?’
The Parable of the Dishonest Manager
LK 16:1
16Then Jesus* said to the disciples, ‘There was a rich man
who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man
was squandering his property. 2So he summoned him and said to him,
“What is this that I hear about you? Give me an account of
your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.”
3Then the manager said to himself, “What will I do, now that
my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough
to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4I have decided what to do so that,
when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their
homes.” 5So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one,
he asked the first, “How much do you owe my master?”
6He answered, “A hundred jugs of olive oil.” He said
to him, “Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.”
7Then he asked another, “And how much do you owe?” He
replied, “A hundred containers of wheat.” He said to
him, “Take your bill and make it eighty.” 8And his master
commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly;
LK 16:8
for the children of this age are more shrewd
in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.
9And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest
wealth* so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal
homes.*
10 ‘Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also
in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest
also in much. 11If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest
wealth,* who will entrust to you the true riches? 12And if you have
not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you
what is your own?
The Rich Man and Lazarus
LK 16:19
19 ‘There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine
linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20And at his gate lay
a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21who longed to satisfy
his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even
the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22The poor man died and
was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham.* The rich man
also died and was buried. 23In Hades, where he was being tormented,
he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.*
24He called out, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send
Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue;
for I am in agony in these flames.” 25But Abraham said, “Child,
remember that during your lifetime you received your good things,
and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted
here, and you are in agony. 26Besides all this, between you and
us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to
pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there
to us.” 27He said, “Then, father, I beg you to send
him to my father’s house— 28for I have five brothers—that
he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place
of torment.” 29Abraham replied, “They have Moses and
the prophets; they should listen to them.” 30He said, “No,
father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they
will repent.” 31He said to him, “If they do not listen
to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if
someone rises from the dead.” ’
Humility and Hospitality
LK 14:7
7 When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honour, he
told them a parable. 8‘When you are invited by someone to
a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case
someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host;
9and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, “Give
this person your place”, and then in disgrace you would start
to take the lowest place. 10But when you are invited, go and sit
down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say
to you, “Friend, move up higher”; then you will be honoured
in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. 11For all
who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves
will be exalted.’
12 He said also to the one who had invited him, ‘When you
give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your
brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, in case they may
invite you in return, and you would be repaid. 13But when you give
a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.
14And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you
will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’
The Parable of the Prodigal and His Brother
LK 15:11
11 Then Jesus* said, ‘There was a man who had two sons. 12The
younger of them said to his father, “Father, give me the share
of the property that will belong to me.” So he divided his
property between them. 13A few days later the younger son gathered
all he had and travelled to a distant country, and there he squandered
his property in dissolute living. 14When he had spent everything,
a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began
to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to one of the
citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the
pigs. 16He would gladly have filled himself with* the pods that
the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. 17But when he
came to himself he said, “How many of my father’s hired
hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger!
18I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, ‘Father,
I have sinned against heaven and before you; 19I am no longer worthy
to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.’
” 20So he set off and went to his father. But while he was
still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion;
he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. 21Then the son
said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before
you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.”* 22But
the father said to his slaves, “Quickly, bring out a robe—the
best one—and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals
on his feet. 23And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat
and celebrate; 24for this son of mine was dead and is alive again;
he was lost and is found!” And they began to celebrate.
25 ‘Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and
approached the house, he heard music and dancing. 26He called one
of the slaves and asked what was going on. 27He replied, “Your
brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because
he has got him back safe and sound.” 28Then he became angry
and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with
him. 29But he answered his father, “Listen! For all these
years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never
disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young
goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. 30But when this
son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes,
you killed the fatted calf for him!” 31Then the father* said
to him, “Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine
is yours. 32But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother
of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been
found.”
The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree
LK 13:6 (MT 21:28, MK 11:12)
6 Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree planted
in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none.
7So he said to the gardener, “See here! For three years I
have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none.
Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?” 8He replied,
“Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig round it
and put manure on it. 9If it bears fruit next year, well and good;
but if not, you can cut it down.” ’
Watchful Slaves
LK 12:35
35 ‘Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 36be like
those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding
banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes
and knocks. 37Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert
when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have
them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. 38If he comes
during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so,
blessed are those slaves.
39 ‘But know this: if the owner of the house had known at
what hour the thief was coming, he* would not have let his house
be broken into. 40You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is
coming at an unexpected hour.’
The Faithful or the Unfaithful Slave
41 Peter said, ‘Lord, are you telling this parable for us
or for everyone?’ 42And the Lord said, ‘Who then is
the faithful and prudent manager whom his master will put in charge
of his slaves, to give them their allowance of food at the proper
time? 43Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work
when he arrives. 44Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge
of all his possessions. 45But if that slave says to himself, “My
master is delayed in coming”, and if he begins to beat the
other slaves, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
46the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect
him and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in pieces,*
and put him with the unfaithful. 47That slave who knew what his
master wanted, but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted,
will receive a severe beating. 48But one who did not know and did
what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone
to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from one
to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.
Treasures New and Old
MT 13:51
51 ‘Have you understood all this?’ They answered, ‘Yes.’
52And he said to them, ‘Therefore every scribe who has been
trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household
who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.’
53When Jesus had finished these parables, he left that place.
THE PRAISE OF THE FATHER
Jesus Thanks His Father
MT 11:25 (LK 10:21)
25 At that time Jesus said, ‘I thank* you, Father, Lord of
heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the
wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; 26yes,
Father, for such was your gracious will.* 27All things have been
handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except
the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone
to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
VII. Healing
HEALING WITHOUT PHARASEE HARASSMENT
Jesus Cleanses a Leper
MK 1:40 (MT 8:1, LK 5:12)
40 A leper* came to him begging him, and kneeling* he said to him,
‘If you choose, you can make me clean.’ 41Moved with
pity,* Jesus* stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to
him, ‘I do choose. Be made clean!’ 42Immediately the
leprosy* left him, and he was made clean. 43After sternly warning
him he sent him away at once, 44saying to him, ‘See that you
say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and
offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to
them.’ 45But he went out and began to proclaim it freely,
and to spread the word, so that Jesus* could no longer go into a
town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him
from every quarter.
LK 4:40 (MK 1:32)
40 As the sun was setting, all those who
had any who were sick with various kinds of diseases brought them
to him; and he laid his hands on each of them and cured them. 41Demons
also came out of many, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’
But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they
knew that he was the Messiah.*
Jesus Cures Many People
MT 15:29
29 After Jesus had left that place, he passed along the Sea of Galilee,
and he went up the mountain, where he sat down. 30Great crowds came
to him, bringing with them the lame, the maimed, the blind, the
mute, and many others. They put them at his feet, and he cured them,
31so that the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking,
the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they
praised the God of Israel.
Jesus Cures a Deaf Man
MK 7:31
31 Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of
Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis.
32They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech;
and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33He took him aside
in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears,
and he spat and touched his tongue. 34Then looking up to heaven,
he sighed and said to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be
opened.’ 35And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue
was released, and he spoke plainly. 36Then Jesus* ordered them to
tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they
proclaimed it. 37They were astounded beyond measure, saying, ‘He
has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the
mute to speak.’
The Healing of Blind Bartimaeus
MK 10:46
46 They came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd
were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar,
was sitting by the roadside. 47When he heard that it was Jesus of
Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, ‘Jesus, Son of David,
have mercy on me!’ 48Many sternly ordered him to be quiet,
but he cried out even more loudly, ‘Son of David, have mercy
on me!’ 49Jesus stood still and said, ‘Call him here.’
And they called the blind man, saying to him, ‘Take heart;
get up, he is calling you.’ 50So throwing off his cloak, he
sprang up and came to Jesus. 51Then Jesus said to him, ‘What
do you want me to do for you?’ The blind man said to him,
‘My teacher,* let me see again.’ 52Jesus said to him,
‘Go; your faith has made you well.’ Immediately he regained
his sight and followed him on the way.
Healing the Sick in Gennesaret
MK 6:53 (MT 14:34)
53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and
moored the boat. 54When they got out of the boat, people at once
recognized him, 55and rushed about that whole region and began to
bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56And wherever
he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in
the market-places, and begged him that they might touch even the
fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.
Jesus Cures a Blind Man at Bethsaida
MK 8:22
22 They came to Bethsaida. Some people* brought a blind man to him
and begged him to touch him. 23He took the blind man by the hand
and led him out of the village; and when he had put saliva on his
eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, ‘Can you see
anything?’ 24And the man* looked up and said, ‘I can
see people, but they look like trees, walking.’ 25Then Jesus*
laid his hands on his eyes again; and he looked intently and his
sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26Then he sent
him away to his home, saying, ‘Do not even go into the village.’*
Jesus Heals One Who Was Mute
MT 9:32
32 After they had gone away, a demoniac who was mute was brought
to him. 33And when the demon had been cast out, the one who had
been mute spoke; and the crowds were amazed and said, ‘Never
has anything like this been seen in Israel.’ 34But the Pharisees
said, ‘By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons.’*
Jesus Heals Two Blind Men
MT 9:27
27 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, crying
loudly, ‘Have mercy on us, Son of David!’ 28When he
entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to
them, ‘Do you believe that I am able to do this?’ They
said to him, ‘Yes, Lord.’ 29Then he touched their eyes
and said, ‘According to your faith let it be done to you.’
30And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus sternly ordered them, ‘See
that no one knows of this.’ 31But they went away and spread
the news about him throughout that district.
Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers
LK 17:11
11 On the way to Jerusalem Jesus* was going through the region between
Samaria and Galilee. 12As he entered a village, ten lepers* approached
him. Keeping their distance, 13they called out, saying, ‘Jesus,
Master, have mercy on us!’ 14When he saw them, he said to
them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as
they went, they were made clean. 15Then one of them, when he saw
that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice.
16He prostrated himself at Jesus’* feet and thanked him. And
he was a Samaritan. 17Then Jesus asked, ‘Were not ten made
clean? But the other nine, where are they? 18Was none of them found
to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?’ 19Then
he said to him, ‘Get up and go on your way; your faith has
made you well.’
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
LK 5:17 (MT 9:1-8, MK 2:1)
17 One day, while he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the
law were sitting nearby (they had come from every village of Galilee
and Judea and from Jerusalem); and the power of the Lord was with
him to heal.* 18Just then some men came, carrying a paralysed man
on a bed. They were trying to bring him in and lay him before Jesus;*
19but finding no way to bring him in because of the crowd, they
went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles
into the middle of the crowd* in front of Jesus. 20When he saw their
faith, he said, ‘Friend,* your sins are forgiven you.’
21Then the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, ‘Who
is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God
alone?’ 22When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered
them, ‘Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? 23Which
is easier, to say, “Your sins are forgiven you”, or
to say, “Stand up and walk”? 24But so that you may know
that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins’—he
said to the one who was paralysed—‘I say to you, stand
up and take your bed and go to your home.’ 25Immediately he
stood up before them, took what he had been lying on, and went to
his home, glorifying God. 26Amazement seized all of them, and they
glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, ‘We have seen
strange things today.’
The Man with a Withered Hand
MT 12:9 ( MK 3:1, LK 6:6)
9 He left that place and entered their synagogue; 10a man was there
with a withered hand, and they asked him, ‘Is it lawful to
cure on the sabbath?’ so that they might accuse him. 11He
said to them, ‘Suppose one of you has only one sheep and it
falls into a pit on the sabbath; will you not lay hold of it and
lift it out? 12How much more valuable is a human being than a sheep!
So it is lawful to do good on the sabbath.’ 13Then he said
to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it
out, and it was restored, as sound as the other. 14But the Pharisees
went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him
A Man Born Blind Receives Sight
JN 9:1
9As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples
asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that
he was born blind?’ 3Jesus answered, ‘Neither this man
nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works
might be revealed in him. 4We* must work the works of him who sent
me* while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5As long
as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’ 6When
he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva
and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, 7saying to him, ‘Go,
wash in the pool of Siloam’ (which means Sent). Then he went
and washed and came back able to see. 8The neighbours and those
who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, ‘Is this
not the man who used to sit and beg?’ 9Some were saying, ‘It
is he.’ Others were saying, ‘No, but it is someone like
him.’ He kept saying, ‘I am the man.’ 10But they
kept asking him, ‘Then how were your eyes opened?’ 11He
answered, ‘The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my
eyes, and said to me, “Go to Siloam and wash.” Then
I went and washed and received my sight.’ 12They said to him,
‘Where is he?’ He said, ‘I do not know.’
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind.
14Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his
eyes. 15Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received
his sight. He said to them, ‘He put mud on my eyes. Then I
washed, and now I see.’ 16Some of the Pharisees said, ‘This
man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath.’
But others said, ‘How can a man who is a sinner perform such
signs?’ And they were divided. 17So they said again to the
blind man, ‘What do you say about him? It was your eyes he
opened.’ He said, ‘He is a prophet.’
18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received
his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received
his sight 19and asked them, ‘Is this your son, who you say
was born blind? How then does he now see?’ 20His parents answered,
‘We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
21but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know
who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.’
22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for
the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus* to
be the Messiah* would be put out of the synagogue. 23Therefore his
parents said, ‘He is of age; ask him.’
24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind,
and they said to him, ‘Give glory to God! We know that this
man is a sinner.’ 25He answered, ‘I do not know whether
he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now
I see.’ 26They said to him, ‘What did he do to you?
How did he open your eyes?’ 27He answered them, ‘I have
told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear
it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?’ 28Then
they reviled him, saying, ‘You are his disciple, but we are
disciples of Moses. 29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but
as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.’ 30The
man answered, ‘Here is an astonishing thing! You do not know
where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31We know that God
does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships
him and obeys his will. 32Never since the world began has it been
heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33If this
man were not from God, he could do nothing.’ 34They answered
him, ‘You were born entirely in sins, and are you trying to
teach us?’ And they drove him out.
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had driven him out, and when he found him,
he said, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’* 36He answered,
‘And who is he, sir?* Tell me, so that I may believe in him.’
37Jesus said to him, ‘You have seen him, and the one speaking
with you is he.’ 38He said, ‘Lord,* I believe.’
And he worshipped him. 39Jesus said, ‘I came into this world
for judgement so that those who do not see may see, and those who
do see may become blind.’ 40Some of the Pharisees near him
heard this and said to him, ‘Surely we are not blind, are
we?’ 41Jesus said to them, ‘If you were blind, you would
not have sin. But now that you say, “We see”, your sin
remains.
Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman
LK 13:10
10 Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
11And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled
her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to
stand up straight. 12When Jesus saw her, he called her over and
said, ‘Woman, you are set free from your ailment.’ 13When
he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and
began praising God. 14But the leader of the synagogue, indignant
because Jesus had cured on the sabbath, kept saying to the crowd,
‘There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on
those days and be cured, and not on the sabbath day.’ 15But
the Lord answered him and said, ‘You hypocrites! Does not
each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger,
and lead it away to give it water? 16And ought not this woman, a
daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be
set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?’ 17When he
said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and the entire crowd
was rejoicing at all the wonderful things that he was doing.
Jesus Heals the Man with Dropsy
LK 14:1
14On one occasion when Jesus* was going to the house of a leader
of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching
him closely. 2Just then, in front of him, there was a man who had
dropsy. 3And Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, ‘Is it
lawful to cure people on the sabbath, or not?’ 4But they were
silent. So Jesus* took him and healed him, and sent him away. 5Then
he said to them, ‘If one of you has a child* or an ox that
has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on
a sabbath day?’ 6And they could not reply to this.
Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
JN 5:1
5After this there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up
to Jerusalem.
2 Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in
Hebrew* Beth-zatha,* which has five porticoes. 3In these lay many
invalids—blind, lame, and paralysed.* 5One man was there who
had been ill for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there
and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, ‘Do
you want to be made well?’ 7The sick man answered him, ‘Sir,
I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred
up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead
of me.’ 8Jesus said to him, ‘Stand up, take your mat
and walk.’ 9At once the man was made well, and he took up
his mat and began to walk.
Now that day was a sabbath. 10So the Jews said to the man who had
been cured, ‘It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to
carry your mat.’ 11But he answered them, ‘The man who
made me well said to me, “Take up your mat and walk.”
’ 12They asked him, ‘Who is the man who said to you,
“Take it up and walk”?’ 13Now the man who had
been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had disappeared in*
the crowd that was there. 14Later Jesus found him in the temple
and said to him, ‘See, you have been made well! Do not sin
any more, so that nothing worse happens to you.’ 15The man
went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16Therefore the Jews started persecuting Jesus, because he was doing
such things on the sabbath. 17But Jesus answered them, ‘My
Father is still working, and I also am working.’ 18For this
reason the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he
was not only breaking the sabbath, but was also calling God his
own Father, thereby making himself equal to God.
